Biography

David "Dave" Hodgins is a British-born visual effects supervisor at Digital Domain. He began his career as an animator and rigger, gradually working his way up to a supervisory role. Over the years, Hodgins has served as Visual Effects Supervisor on a wide range of feature films, many of which were produced by major studios. His credits include The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011), Ender's Game (2013), Power Rangers (2017), as well as large-scale tentpoles such as Captain Marvel (2019) and Thor: Ragnarok (2017). On "Captain Marvel," Hodgins and his team were responsible for the complex visual effects that brought the alien Skrulls' transformations to life — creating organic, skin-based morphing effects grounded in naturalistic detail rather than stylised science-fiction caricatures. For "Thor: Ragnarok," he led a large team (spanning Los Angeles and Vancouver) that produced 188 shots for the film, including the creation of an entire alien world — Sakaar — complete with its chaotic cityscape, spaceships and high-speed chase sequences.  Perhaps the most recognised highlight of his career came with Black Widow (2021), where, as Visual Effects Supervisor, he oversaw a team of around 250 artists working across multiple studios (Los Angeles, Vancouver, Montreal) to deliver some 320 VFX shots. These included monumental sequences: the CG destruction of the Red Room, intense skydiving stunts, and the climactic battle. For this work, Hodgins — along with colleagues Hanzhi Tang, Ryan Duhaime, James Reid and Edmond Smith III — was awarded the HPA Award for Outstanding Visual Effects – Theatrical Feature in 2021 for "Black Widow."
